Post subject: Diatomaceous Earth (DE) PostPosted: Thu Dec 14, 2006 3:53 pm

I have seen on many sites people referring others to use Diatomaceous Earth to help solve their bed bug infestation.

I can not reiterate enough how dangerous it is to use products of any kind without proper training. It can be dangerous to your health, to the health of others and if applied incorrectly can serve to worsen the infestation.

The above statement is not made in an attempt to secure more business for the pest control industry, it is to allow for more effective control of bed bugs.

A pest control technician's worst nightmare is to be called out to solve a bed bug problem that a resident has attempted (and failed) to rid.

With that disclaimer out of the way here is some information on DE:

WARNING: The use of any product without consulting the label, local and federal laws is not recommended.

There is some evidence to suggest that some Diatomaceous Earth might be carcinogenic (cancer causing). This especially holds true if it is of saltwater origin and inhaled (keep in mind these are microscopic particles).
There are MANY forms of DE on the market - do your research and opt for food grade DE.

Diatoms are unicellular algae that can be found in both fresh and salt water environments. These microscopic algae have cell walls lined with silica. As diatoms fossilize these "shells" remain and form diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous Earth is essentially crushed, fossilized diatoms.

The substance itself is a chalk-like powder.

To soft bodied insects Diatomaceous Earth is razor sharp.

If applied correctly (very thin application, barely noticeable) it can act as an excellent mechanical pesticide.

The insect unknowingly begins walking across the DE and the abrasive properties of the powder scratch the exoskeleton of the insect. The absorptive properties of DE act to draw moisture out of the insect's exocuticle.

If enough abrasions are made the exoskeleton loses its ability to retain moisture inside the insect. The insect eventually dessicates (dries out).

Applied incorrectly the insect will detect the DE and go around it, or worse yet, spread to a new area.

Could someone tell me what type of store you would buy food-grade, fresh-water Diatomaceous Earth from?

Post subject: An interesting story to share PostPosted: Tue Jul 29, 2008 8:57 pm

With permission from the Forum owner who has kindly allowed me this opportunity to talk briefly about my product and was also very helpful in supplying very accurate data and statistics for my web site BedBugPowder.

My name is Stephen and I would like to share a quick story.
Once we were certain we had Bed Bugs, my Wife and I attempted to find some answers we so quickly learned that everyone was an expert: Foggers, blow dryers, $200 exterminators and my favorite "Just throw away your new $3000 mattress"!

What later became our company catalyst, was a trip to our local corner store and the sales lady who said these words "I sell this to folks all the time." She was referring to a product that could actually harm us and could even kill small pets. I was shocked at the amount of bad and sometimes dangerous information out there.

I remember reading about how safe Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth was to humans and how it worked as a mechanical Bed Bug killer.

Our product BedBugPowder™ is not a chemical. It works mechanically and thus bed bugs cannot become immune to it. BedBugPowder™ also offers up a residual effect that lasts for weeks. This means that as bed bugs walk around in search of food they will tread on bed bug powder and eventually die.

If you are interested feel free to visit our site at BedBugPowder

Accurate forums like this one are far and few between. My Wife and I wish we knew about it sometime ago. Hats off and a special thanks to the Forum Owner.

Many of the Head Lice Treatment products that are on the market can be fatally harmful to your child because of the dangerous chemicals that are used as ingredients and can only be used a few times ever. In fact one product, Lindane, has been banned from use in California and Canada because of its harmful side effects. Make sure that you read the label and directions carefully before using any product. But do not worry, our Head Lice Treatment is 100% Non-Toxic and Chemical Free. It is safe to use without harm to your child as well as while you are pregnant. We have combined our Lice Infestation Removal Kit with the Nitfree Terminator Comb to make an unbeatable package deal that will help you easily eliminate the head lice quickly and most importantly safely.
